How to read upholstery performance — before it's on your floor.

Specifiers get textile numbers thrown at them constantly. Three actually predict how a piece survives a commercial environment: abrasion, cleanability, and what's underneath the fabric.

Abrasion: the Martindale number

Martindale (double rubs in the US system) measures how many friction cycles a fabric survives before wearing through. Residential fabrics live around 15,000–25,000 cycles. Contract environments should start at 40,000+, and high-traffic hospitality seating — lobby, restaurant, tasting room — earns its keep at 100,000+. When Limn specifies textiles for a Pacifica outdoor program or an Inyo lounge grouping, the abrasion rating is matched to the setting, not the swatch book.

Cleanability and colorfastness

Commercial upholstery meets cleaning chemistry weekly. Bleach-cleanable and solution-dyed textiles keep their color through it; printed residential fabrics don't. Outdoor and poolside settings add UV colorfastness — a rating worth asking for by name.

What's underneath matters as much
